A talented musician, Instagram influencer and a former high school football star, PJ Simien III, was killed in a single-car accident on Monday, July 15.
The accident happened early in the morning on Monday, on Interstate 10 in Houston. Simien was driving his black Jeep Wrangler when he veered into sand barrels placed by the Department of Transportation at an exit ramp toward the HOV lanes that led to downtown Houston. His sport-utility vehicle rolled over several times and then he was apparently ejected from the car.
When the police arrived at the scene, Simien was already dead.
The journalist Ronald S. Martin, who happened to be Simien’s cousin, posted a long emotional Twitter thread on Simien’s death.
This has been a tough morning for my family. I woke up at 7 am EST to do my @tjmshow segment and my phone had a text message from my sister. It was sent at 6:44 am. It said: "Good morning, Are you awake?" I knew something was amiss. 1/11

Simien had about 11,300 followers on Instagram. He called himself the “Fresh Prince of Acres Homes,” a Houston neighborhood. He was very active in social media, and the news triggered lots of tributes via Instagram.
Yvonne Guidry, a close friend of Simien, posted a short video of him dancing, laughing and having a good time. Guidry and Simien often partied together. They saw each other on Sunday evening, right before the accident.
“It’s just devastating, really,” Yvonne Guidry wrote. “You would always see him on Instagram on his microphone, singing on Instagram stories.”
Simien was drinking tequila in the final Instagram story, posted before the car crash. However, the investigators have yet to confirm whether the alcohol might have caused the accident.
Simien’s friend Tameka Lord said that he was confused that Simien didn’t use Uber.
Yvonne Guidry shared similar feelings:
“This whole Houston community, we all must do better in taking responsibility of our friends leaving an establishment, because it’s just a sad awakening that he’s gone,” she shared.
